On March 18, 2026, ARISE welcomed Professor Abbie Liel for a Lighthouse Presentation on her career evolution and the experiences that have shaped her current areas of focus.
Professor Liel shared reflections on mentorship, friendship, and adversity, as well as the parts of her work where she is currently finding joy. Her talk offered a personal perspective on building a research career while remaining open to the people and experiences that change its direction.

Professor Abbie Liel (she/her) is a Professor of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. She holds an undergraduate degree from Princeton University in Civil Engineering and Public Policy, as well as graduate degrees from University College London and Stanford University.
Her scholarship and professional service focus on disaster risk reduction, including multihazard risks to housing, functional recovery, and climate-change impacts on the built environment.
She is a licensed Professional Engineer in California, a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and a recipient of an Applied Technology Council Award for Excellence for Extraordinary Achievement in Development of Applications for Seismic Performance Evaluation.
